STC89xx series, produced by STC MCU Limited, is an 8-bit single-chip microcontroller with a fully compatible instruction set with the industrial-standard 80C51 series. It embeds 64K bytes of flash memory for application program, shared with In-System-Programming (ISP) code. Firmware extraction from an STC89xx is possible through the ISP interface when the chip is not locked. ISP and IAP (In-Application-Programming) support users to upgrade program and data in system. ISP allows downloading new code without removing the microcontroller from the end product; IAP means the device can write non-volatile data in Flash memory while the application program is running. On-chip RAM of 1280 bytes or 512 bytes meets diverse application requirements. The user can configure the device to run in 12 clocks per machine cycle (standard 80C51 speed) or 6 clocks per machine cycle to achieve twice the performance. The STC89xx series retains all features of the standard 80C51 and adds an extra I/O port (P4), Timer 2, and more. Because the core is 8051-compatible, reverse engineering of STC firmware can reuse standard 8051 disassembly tools.
For many designers, choosing an STC part is an easy way to crack through the cost and performance limits of older 8051 offerings. STC12C5620AD is a 1T architecture 8051 CPU that executes instructions in 1–6 clock cycles (about 8–12 times faster than a standard 8051). It features 10-bit ADC (100k samples/sec), on-chip crystal oscillator, MAX810 reset, 4-channel PCA/PWM, SPI, and a one-time enabled watchdog timer. The one-time enabled watchdog helps the device recover after a fault or an attempted attack on the program flow.
STC12C5A60S2 is another 1T 8051 device, executing instructions in 1–6 clock cycles (6–7 times faster). It adds two extra I/O ports (P4 and P5), a 10-source, 4-priority interrupt structure, 10-bit ADC, two UARTs, on-chip oscillator, 2-channel PCA/PWM, SPI, and a watchdog timer. The extra I/O ports and the second UART let designers unlock richer applications without external glue logic.
All STC chips have a pre-installed, non-erasable bootloader. STC publishes its own downloader software (STC-ISP for Windows), and there is also an open-source alternative STCGAL for Linux/macOS. A full memory dump of the flash can be captured with STC-ISP or the open-source STCGAL tool. They are 8051-core derivatives and can be programmed with SDCC (public domain) and a serial interface. Because the tools are open, developers often hack together custom flashing and test workflows around them.
