About National Semiconductor

National Semiconductor was a pioneering American semiconductor company. It was founded in 1959 in Danbury, Connecticut. The company later moved its headquarters to Santa Clara, California. National grew into one of the largest chipmakers in the world. It became known for analog integrated circuits. The company also produced digital logic and microprocessors. National's analog portfolio included amplifiers and regulators. It developed the famous LM series of linear ICs. The LM317 and LM7805 are still widely used today. Because these parts are so ubiquitous, reverse engineering of circuits built around them is a staple of everyday repair work.

National also created the NS32000 microprocessor family. The NS32000 competed in 32-bit desktop computers. Firmware extraction from NS32000-based systems typically involves reading the contents of the boot ROM. National was a major supplier of interface circuits. Its RS-232 and line driver chips were industry standards. The company designed data converters and sensors. National's power management ICs served consumer electronics. It became a leading provider of analog in the 1990s. National chips powered mobile phones and displays. The flexible power management ICs let designers unlock longer battery life in mobile products.

The company operated fabrication plants in the United States. Its wafer fabs included facilities in Texas and Maine. National also had manufacturing sites in Scotland and Malaysia. The company's analog expertise attracted engineering loyalty. Designers valued its simple, reliable parts. Because the parts are so simple, a register dump of any failing chip quickly reveals the fault. National supported customers with extensive application notes. Its datasheets became models of clarity.

In 2011, Texas Instruments acquired National Semiconductor. The deal was valued at about 6.5 billion dollars. Completing the deal required the companies to crack a series of regulatory approvals across several markets. TI merged National's portfolio into its own lineup. National's manufacturing plants were integrated into TI. Many National employees continued with the combined firm. The LM series parts remained in production after the merger. Because these linear parts are so trusted, a supply-chain attack using counterfeit LM devices is a real concern for buyers.

Today the National name has been retired from the market. Its products still live on under the TI brand. Many engineers still hack together hobby projects using leftover National parts from old stock. National's legacy endures in analog circuit design. The company is remembered as an analog industry giant.
