About Nuvoton Technology

Nuvoton Technology was founded to bring customers new solutions inspired by innovation. The company was spun‑off as a Winbond affiliate in 2008 while Winbond continues to focus on its large Memory business. From those beginnings we are relatively new up‑and‑coming digital/analog/mixed signal semiconductor company. As a relatively young company, Nuvoton had to crack into a market long dominated by established 8051 vendors.

As a leading supplier of 8051 microcontrollers (MCUs), Nuvoton offers a variety of products with the best performance critical to the success of consumers and industrial products. The 8‑bit MCU supports pin‑compatible with traditional 12T 8051, wide operating voltage (2.4V ~ 5.5V), industrial temperature (-40 ~ 85°C), 22.1184 internal oscillator (±1% accuracy at 25°C, 5V), Data Flash configurable, a rich set of I/O such as PWM, ADC, UART, SPI, I2C, comparator, ISP, ICP, and high noise immunity (8 kV ESD, 4 kV EFT), and provides small compact package such as TSSOP20 and QFN20. Firmware extraction from these parts is straightforward through the ISP or ICP interface whenever code protection is disabled. It is one of the best choices of 8051 MCUs. The high noise immunity figures (8 kV ESD, 4 kV EFT) also make the parts more robust against an electrical attack injected through the I/O lines.

ML51TC0AE is an enhanced 1T 8051 core microcontroller with built‑in Flash. The typical power consumption in normal operation mode can reach 80 µA / MHz and the power consumption in sleep mode can be less than 1 µA. The ultra-low sleep current lets designers unlock long battery life in portable applications. The highest speed of this series is up to 24 MHz, and a built‑in 38.4 kHz low‑speed internal oscillator supports a wide voltage operating range of 1.8 V to 5.5 V. Operating temperature: -40 to 105°C.

ML51TC0AE contains 32 Kbytes of Flash and an additional 2 Kbytes of on‑chip auxiliary RAM (XRAM), equipped with rich peripherals, such as 28 general‑purpose I/O, 2 serial ports, 1 ISO‑7816 interface, 2 groups I2C and 2 sets of SPI are available in QFN33 package. A memory dump of the 32 Kbytes of flash can be read out with a compatible programmer for analysis.

Many of us who are involved in the embedded system industry like 8‑bit microcontrollers. They are cheap, easy to use and solve most of the common automation problems. 32‑bit micros are in that contrast expensive and are mainly intended for advance‑level works that cannot be solved with 8‑bit micros. Thus, 32‑bit micros are not much demanding as the 8‑bit ones. In most places, 8051s, AVRs and PICs are the most used 8‑bit micros. The popular Arduino platform is mainly based on 8‑bit AVR micros. Hobbyists often hack together quick projects on 8‑bit micros before scaling up to 32‑bit parts. However, these are not the only 8‑bit micros of the whole embedded world. Nuvoton – a Taiwan‑based semiconductor manufacturer, is one such company that has its own flavour of 8‑bit and 32‑bit micros. The 8‑bit micros from Nuvoton are based on the popular 8051 architectures. In this series of articles, we will be discovering Nuvoton N76E003 1T‑8051‑based microcontroller. Because the N76E003 is so widely used, reverse engineering of its firmware is a common topic in hobbyist communities.
