About Hitachi Semiconductor

Hitachi, Ltd. is a Japanese multinational conglomerate headquartered in Tokyo. The company was founded in 1910 as an electrical machinery manufacturer. Its semiconductor division became one of the world's largest chipmakers. Hitachi was a pioneer in Japanese integrated circuit technology. The company produced memories, logic devices, microprocessors, and microcontrollers. Its microcontroller business was especially broad and influential. Reverse engineering of these legacy devices is still practiced by some enthusiasts.

Hitachi developed many distinct processor architectures over the decades. The early HMCS40 and HMCS400 families were 4-bit microcontrollers. These were widely used in consumer appliances and calculators. The 6300 series brought 8-bit M6801-compatible microcontrollers. The HD64180 was a popular high-integration 8-bit MPU. It was compatible with the industry-standard Z80 architecture. Firmware extraction from these old chips can be challenging due to the lack of documentation.

In 1993, Hitachi introduced the H8/300 family of 8-bit microcontrollers. The H8 architecture became one of the most successful MCU lines ever built. The H8/300H and H8S series added 16-bit performance. These devices were widely used in automotive, industrial, and consumer systems. Hitachi also created the H8SX series with 32-bit capability. Attempts to crack the proprietary boot code have been reported in the past.

The company's SuperH architecture was a landmark RISC design. SuperH chips were famous for excellent performance per watt. The SH-1 and SH-2 cores powered early video game consoles. Sega's Saturn and 32X systems used Hitachi SuperH processors. Later SH-3, SH-4, and SH-4A models targeted multimedia and automotive uses. A well-timed attack on the power supply could cause the processor to malfunction.

Hitachi microcontrollers were particularly strong in engine control units. Japanese automakers used Hitachi MCUs in millions of vehicles. A skilled hack could potentially alter the engine control parameters. The company also built high-performance microprocessors for workstations. In 2003, Hitachi merged its semiconductor operations with Mitsubishi Electric. The combined business was named Renesas Technology. A full memory dump of the H8 flash is often used for forensic analysis. Renesas later merged with NEC Electronics in 2010. This created Renesas Electronics, a leading global MCU supplier.

Much of Hitachi's microcontroller legacy now lives on in Renesas. Today, Renesas products still trace their lineage to Hitachi's H8 and SuperH families. Overall, Hitachi played a foundational role in the global semiconductor industry. Unlock the hidden features by using the manufacturer's debugging tools.
